The Naval and Marine Police (NMP) is a unique amalgamation of civil and military police forces into one. A large amount of separate ports police forces - each operating to different standards and under different jurisdictions - caused increasing frustration with the country's naval and commercial shipping alike.

It was decided to bring all ports police under one unified, special police force. With more manpower than the army and the airforce, and with its existing expertise in all things nautical, it was decided that the Navy would take over the running of this newly created police force - transforming it from the Navy Police to the Naval and Marine Police - although most people still call it the Navy Police.

The NMP has full jurisdiction within ports - whether military or civil - and patrols and enforces laws in both the military and civil sectors, with assistance from the appropriate local and military police forces if required.
